“Once upon a time in a far away land, a young prince lived in a shiny castle. Although he had everything his heart desired, the Prince was spoiled, selfish and unkind. But then one winter’s night an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. Repulsed by her haggard appearance, the prince sneered at the gift and turned the old woman away. But she warned him not to be deceived by appearances for beauty is found within…”
Cue sparkling gown and magic bursts, amazing enchantress cursing the Prince. We all know the story of Beauty and the Beast. Actually we know a little of Belle’s story, but what about the Beast.
Making a spin off from the original storyline is a brilliant idea. Especially if you have budding bookworms at home, that tends to question things like Belle. This easy read is ideal for young minds asking more than the movie answers. (Or die hard Disney fans like myself)
This is a small (218 page) novel, that focuses on the Prince becoming the Beast. The events leading up to it, the friends that once were, and the ones that never left
The unique twist of the Prince’s history with women, the cause of the curse, the enchantress’s crazy sisters rooting for the Beast to fail.
This is a good read when discussing the theme of Redemption and choices having consequences. Each one of us has an inner beast, how do you deal with yours?
Ideally I would recommend this for young kids, dealing with bullies and aggression problems, as you find a lot of the monologue will show you the mindset of the beast in a unique way. But most importantly it show the realization on the Beast side that everything is ultimately a choice.
How did a prince, once beloved by his people, become a bitter and reclusive monster?
A young handsome, Prince lives a life of extravagance before he is forced to pay the ultimate price for his ugly deeds.
This is a story of vanity and arrogance, of love and hatred, of beastliness and, of course, beauty.
