Okay so there are a lot of mixed feelings about this book and I totally get it. It has a slow start. It’s part of a duology so just stick with it. It will make sense.
Smart’s writing is pure magic in itself. With prose that crackles and a world that shimmers with vivid detail, she crafts a narrative that will transport you to the lush, treacherous world of Bellona. The island’s lush jungles and mystical ruins come to life, painting a backdrop as beguiling and dangerous as the characters who inhabit it.
“Trouble doesn’t give signs like rain.”
― Ciannon Smart, Witches Steeped in Gold
Along with the slow start another challenge for me was the complex world building along with an extremely complex magic system. Because you are experiencing this world from 2 POV’s it does take a little time to truly get into it. But as I progressed I found it harder and harder to put down.
At the core of “Witches Steeped in Gold” is a riveting rivalry between two fierce heroines, Jazmyne Cariot and Iraya Adair. Both are as complex and cunning as they come, and Smart masterfully explores their shifting loyalties, rivalries, and desires. These multifaceted characters will keep you on the edge of your seat as their destinies intertwine.
I adore this African inspired Femme Fatale fantasy. I’m here for the Queens and their epic powers and power moves. It really is addictive. But like all truly fabulous series it takes a little persistence from the reader, a true commitment for the magic to come alive.
The world-building in this novel is unparalleled, as Smart delves deep into Bellona’s rich history, religion, and magical systems. The island is as much a character as any other, filled with hidden realms, ancient traditions, and forbidden powers. The world’s intricacies and secrets are unveiled layer by layer, creating a rich tapestry that adds depth to the narrative.
“For power, acceptance, sometimes we do what we never thought we would”
― Ciannon Smart, Witches Steeped in Gold
Smart’s narrative touches on themes of power, vengeance, and the sacrifices people make for their desires. It is a story of double-crosses, shifting alliances, and the irresistible pull of darkness. The characters’ complexities and moral dilemmas make for a thought-provoking and engaging read.

I am so happy I stuck with it, I absolutely cannot wait to get myself a copy of book 2.
In conclusion, “Witches Steeped in Gold” is a tale that will ensnare you from the first page and refuse to let go. Ciannon Smart’s stunning storytelling, vivid world-building, and morally ambiguous characters create a reading experience that is nothing short of magical. If you’re ready to be enchanted by a world where alliances shift like quicksilver and magic is both a weapon and a curse, don’t miss this extraordinary debut. Enter Bellona and prepare to be bewitched by “Witches Steeped in Gold.”
