Upon embarking on this journey, I realised I haven’t actually read any books on faeries since finishing school. Elfhame is a wonderful place, but the people who live there are awful. A few things to know. Faeries can’t lie, but they can bend the truth. Rowan berries and Salt should be kept on your person at all times. And last but not least. Trust no one.
Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.
Upon arriving in Elfhame you meet an interesting family. After witnessing the death of their parents, Jude and her sisters were abducted by the murderer and taken to the magically deceitful Faerie.
Not quite fitting in due to their human nature the twin sisters get mocked mercilessly and tortured at every encounter. Jude soon realises in order to survive, she would have to beat them at their own game.
“Nice things don’t happen in storybooks. Or when they do happen, something bad happens next. Because otherwise the story would be boring, and no one would read it.”Holly Black, The Cruel Prince
Elfhame is a magical place filled with all natures of folklore. The short travel from their homestead to class will feel like you are seeing different worlds. Holly Black has an ability to create worlds like no other. Vivid descriptions will whisk you away to magical places and bolstering scenes.
I enjoyed this book alot. But this is not necessarily an easy read. This book addresses a often taboo topic – Bullying – in such an unique and intense manner that you feel pulled into the drama. It shows the victim becoming the hero in a non-traditional way through not so nice methods
From a story line perspective this book is a big build up for the second one. So please don’t stop here.
The Lost Sisters
The Novella takes place between book one and two. This is scripted as a long letter to Jude from her sister, explaining certain events from her point of view.
This alternative writing style suits the small Novella perfectly. It’s available in e-book on google books and is a quick read. It is quite an eye opener and will change the way you viewed the actions of the parties involved.
I have heard that for mortals the feeling of falling in love is very like the feeling of fear.
After successfully tricking Cardan onto the Throne, Jude fancies herself a puppet master pulling the strings for exactly a year and a day. With a growing fascination for Jude, Cardan goes out of his way to make her life difficult.
But with a traitor in their mist, Jude can’t afford to waste time on figuring out her own feelings. She has to fight for her life and the lives of those she loves.
“The Folk doubtlessly learned this lesson long ago. They do not need to deceive humans. Humans will deceive themselves.”Holly Black, The Wicked King
The second book in the series is as riveting as the first. Building on the theme of bullying and revenge, Black shows how revenge doesn’t have a happy ending in a unique way. Well almost ending anyway. I look forward to the highly anticipated release of Queen of Nothing. The third installment in this series.
